Lee Hun (School of Electrical Engineering 94) of EVAR has been introduced as the leading leader of a start-up electric car charging technology company. The company developed a hand-operated mobile EV charger.
Lee explained the motive behind the development of portable smart chargers, "electric cars are increasing while the space and electricity of apartments and buildings are limited. People may suffer from the shortage of chargers in 2-3 years. This is the reason why charging issues that require large space and electricity need solutions."
In the beginning, EVAR developed self-driving chargers with batteries attached. The self-driving type charger robot would find the car by itself, when the driver requested to charge at an indoor parking lot, using the markers attached on pillars of the parking lot. However, because the legal system on self-driving robots is not settled yet, the company created cart-form chargers in 2019. The cart form charger is as large as a laundry machine and weighs 750kg but is easy to push due to the muscle power-enhancing sensor that detects pushing force. Lee emphasized that "the capacity of the battery is 40§Òh, which is large enough to charge 2-3 electric cars at once," he added, "while it takes longer time to fully charge, once it is charged, it is more effective since it reduces the wait time and also uses extra power."
In May, EVAR created an immobile Smart EV Charger that divides electrical currents within an apartment effectively and connects a maximum of 5 chargers at once. Starting from November 2020, it has also been conducting an OnDemand pilot project in Jeju Island, which carries the battery on a truck and charges electric cars within the area. Additionally, as Jeju was designated as the "Jeju Electric Vehicle Regulation Free Special Zone," EVAR's product was selected to be tested on Jeju for two years, without any legal regulations. Lee mentioned that "the product is being tested on its safety level, using its operation big data." He also explained, "once the testing is over and regulations are removed, the drivers will be able to charge their vehicles with carts as of next year."
Lee announced this year's goal to increase the supply of wall-mounted smart chargers, as well as expanding the company's service to other related projects such as the Charging Subscription. He added, "I would like to give courage to the drivers so that they do not refrain from selecting electric cars because of charging. The company will grow to realize its slogan 'Electric Car Life without Worries of Charging.'"
