On the 20th, Han Tae-hee, a professor from the Department of Organic and Nano Engineering at Hanyang University, co-developed graphene elastic fibers with excellent torsional properties with the research team of Professor Lee Won-joon of Dankook University. Most of the existing studies focused on strengthening tensile characteristics due to the ease of measurement and interpretation. In response, the research team manufactured fibers with high orientation by connecting sheet-type graphene with bar-type carbon nanotubes and elongating fibers so that graphene particles are combined strongly and have high orientation. These fibers were eight times stronger than metals and 300 times stronger than polymers. The strength ratio by weight (in MPa1/2 cm3 g-1) is 19, which is lighter and stronger than super-fiber carbon fiber. In particular, carbon fiber was very resistant to pull forces rather than torsion, while graphene fiber showed a very unusual property of being more resistant to torsion. The research team expects the torsional strength measurement method and elasticity measurement method of nanomaterial fabric to be widely applied in the study of strength characteristics of nanomaterial assemblies. It is expected to contribute to research on improving the strength of automobiles, aviation, machinery, and building materials that require high shear strength as well as artificial muscles and sensors that require excellent torsional characteristics. Professor Han said, "Graphene fibers with excellent torsional strength and elasticity are highly likely to be mass-produced continuously as they have a stable radiation process for a long time." The results of the study conducted with the support from the National Research Foundations were published in the international journal named 'Nature Communications'. The title of the research paper is ¡¯Carbon nanotube-reduced graphene oxide fiber with high torsional strength from rheological hierarchy control¡¯. |
